SUMMARY:Teal There’s a Cure'' 5K run/walk
DESCRIPTION:The 14th annual Maureen T. O’Hara “Teal There’s a Cure” 5K run/walk will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday\, July 4 at Marcellus Park. Participants will follow the course through the village of Marcellus\, along Nine Mile Creek and back to the park. The 5K run/walk will also be available to participate in virtually\, anytime throughout the month of July. \nThe annual 5K run/walk was started in 2009 by the O’Hara family to educate people about ovarian cancer and raise awareness for the disease. The race was officially renamed the Maureen T. O’Hara “Teal There’s a Cure” 5K run/walk in 2015 in honor of the O’Haras’ daughter/sister Maureen\, who passed away from ovarian cancer one week after the 2012 event. Since 2009\, “Teal There’s a Cure” fundraising events have collectively raised more than $430\,000 for ovarian cancer research and awareness. Teal is the official color for ovarian cancer awareness. \nThis year alone\, an estimated 19\,880 women will be diagnosed and approximately 12\,810 women will die from ovarian cancer\, according to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women in the United States. Due to the nonspecific symptoms of ovarian cancer\, only 20% of all cases are found at an early stage. Most cases are not diagnosed until a later stage\, resulting in a survival rate as low as 30%. Currently\, there is no early detection test to specifically screen for ovarian cancer. \nWHERE: Marcellus Park\, 2443 Platt Road\, Marcellus\, New York 13108 \nONLINE REGISTRATION: https://runsignup.com/Race/NY/Marcellus/TealTheresACure5K \nREGISTRATION DETAILS: For the in-person event\, registration is $30 until June 20 and $35 until noon on July 3.
